1
What got you into running and what keeps you going?
JC
I started running as an intern with the National Park Service in 2012. Each year, we have to pass a fitness exam that includes a mile and a half run. I never ran before the internship, so a classmate of mine had to teach me how to run. And I really really loved it! During my internship at my first Park, I started running longer than the required mile and a half and never looked back.
2
What's your favorite part of training and what's the biggest challege?
JC
I love interval training. It's a good time for me to work on my speed and going fast is fun! On the other side of the coin, my biggest challenge is towards the end of my interval training when I get tired. But I always know there's a cold glass of lemonade waiting for me when I get home.
3
How do you stay motivated on days when you don't feel like running?
JC
I've never regretted going on a run. Even when I'm too tired or it's cold or too early or (insert less than ideal condition here), I've never regretted it afterwards. So, I always remind myself of that.
4
What's been your proudest running moment so far?
JC
My proudest moment as a runner so far is founding a running club at my Park. Work has been stressful for most of my colleagues lately and I wanted to do something to offer some relief. It's only been about 2 months, but seeing the community we're building together and everyone having fun has given me immense joy.
5
What advice would you give to someone just starting their running journey?
JC
Have fun with it! Baby, we were born to run!!
6
How has running changed you mentally or physically?
JC
Mentally, I've become more confident, especially right after my first half marathon, and happier. Physically, I feel stronger. Mentally and physically, everything feels lighter.
7
What's the best running advice you've ever received?
JC
Dean Karnazes told me (via Youtube video): "run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must; just never give up." To me, that's about running and life in general.
